How to Play Wordle Puzzles

All the Wordle puzzles on this site follow the same game mechanics as the original NYT Wordle.

In each puzzle, you have six attempts to guess a hidden five-letter word. Every guess must be a valid word. Depending on the specific puzzle, some answers may not be standard English words, but instead relate to the theme of the game. For example, Soccer Wordle may include player names, while Dog Wordle may include breed names or types.

After each guess, feedback is given using colored tiles: green indicates the correct letter in the correct position, yellow indicates a correct letter in the wrong position, and gray indicates incorrect letters.

For illustration purposes, let’s play Infinite Wordle, our unlimited version of the original Wordle game.

To begin, we will enter our first guess. Let’s try the word RATIO.

Unfortunately, all the letters in RATIO turned grey, which means that none of them appear in the target word for this puzzle.

But we have five guesses remaining, which means we can still continue playing. So let’s move on to our second guess. Let’s try the word LUCKY.

Aha, LUCKY has proven to be a great guess—just like its meaning! It has revealed green U, K, and Y, which means these letters are in the correct positions. So now we only need to think of words that keep those letters exactly where they are on the board.

As you play, it’s also important to keep track of the letters you’ve already used and those you haven’t. So far, we haven’t used Q, W, E, S, D, F, G, H, P, J, Z, X, V, B, N, M. These are the letters we should now consider for future guesses. Don’t waste time with R, A, T, I, O, L, C, since they are already marked grey, meaning they are absent from the target word.

Based on the positions of U, K, and Y, let’s try words like DUSKY, HUNKY, or HUSKY. We’ll start with DUSKY.

DUSKY gives us results similar to LUCKY in terms of the green letter positions, but it also provides extra information: D and S are not in the answer. That means we can rule out HUSKY, since it contains an S. Let’s try HUNKY instead.

Voilà! HUNKY has given us the win. So the word we were looking for is HUNKY.

That’s how interesting Wordle puzzles are, and how you progress from the start to the end of a game.
